Getting Business-Ready As A Creative In 2023

Getting Business-ready As a Creative In 2023

It is a new year. It has been for a month now. While we have made peace with the passing of the previous year, one can rightly say 2022 was a great year for creatives in Nigerian music industry.

You don’t think so? Well, let’s take a leap back in time. From Tems winning two awards at the 2022 BET awards, to Tems, Burna Boy, Fireboy DML, CKay, & Rema featuring on the “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” soundtrack, Burna Boy and Wizkid selling out the phenomenal Madison Square Garden, Oxlade and Kizz Daniel setting the world in a frenzy with their international hits “kulosa” and “Buga” respectively, Kizz Daniel performing at the FIFA World Cup Fans Festival in Qatar, Davido featuring on the Official FIFA World Cup soundtrack and subsequently performing at the World Cup opening ceremony in Qatar, among many others.

With all these in mind, it is safe to say 2023 promises to be even better for artists and creatives in the industry.

Here are some tips for you creatives to help you get business ready in 2023.

Properly Evaluate Your 2022 Performance.

What were, as objectively as you can, your triumphs and failures in 2022? Compute things like your music reach, fan spread, monies spent and monies made and other important performance indicators after making a list of each.

By doing this, you’ll be in a better position to decide on your goals for the upcoming year and to be honest about what’s actually doable. Based on your most recent financial strength and capabilities, you may now make a spending plan for 2023.

Create a Strategy for 2023.

Now that you are armed with a proper evaluation of your 2022 performance, you can now create a strategy for 2023.

What needs to be done differently? How do you go about it? How can you improve on your performance from 2022? These are all questions that should guide you in creating a strategy for 2023.

Consider Accelerating Your Digital Transformation

This is 2023 and as a creative, you should pay more mind to your digital transformation. We are in an age of digital music creation and consumption. You have being an Audiomack artist for too long, it’s time to move to more profitable platforms.

Also, your Electronic Press Kit (EPK) should be in order. Your EPK gives you a digital presence and makes it easier for music industry professionals such as managers, booking agents, venues, promoters, journalists, and more, to access and review your work.

Automation Is King

In the contemporary business world, automation is a given. This is not just limited to huge enterprises; many small businesses are also integrating automation into their daily routines.

You should find ways to bring in automation into your routine as a creative. There are myriad of apps and websites that can help to automate your routine. Things like engagement with fans and giving them update on new music can be automated. Also, social media posts and promotions can be automated. This allows you to focus on more productive activities to yield better results.

Work on Your Communication Strategy

Communication is everything. Your strategy for communicating with fans should be paid proper attention. Create a flow of communication using emails and even via your social media platforms.

A very good example is Adekunle Gold’s email newsletter where he relates with the fans and updates the fans on the latest happenings in his music and life. This gives the fans a sense of being a part of the artist’s personal life and music journey.

Pay More Attention to Your Branding

This year, do not play with your branding. Your branding is who you are and what you are. It is the first point of contact between you and the world. Without proper branding, your music career is toss. Your brand comprises of yourself (personal brand) and your work.

Focus on growing personally as an artist. This may include taking up singing classes and voice training, working out at the gym to keep fit – to help with your performance on stage – taking dance classes, etc. For your work, you can up your social media presence, pay more mind to graphics that you put out to evoke emotions of your fans and also bring in new fans, and also consider selling merchandise that represent your art.

One thing you should know as a creative is that your fans are your customers. They give life to your music career. Pay attention to them and make them feel you carry them along on important decisions that concern your music and life. This is sure to bring them even closer and keep you winning in 2023!

We are open to receiving all the amazing music you have for us this year. May we all win!
